Before spending money on acoustic treatment, before changing components, before adjusting any control on any piece of equipment — speaker placement should be optimised. It costs nothing, it is fully reversible, and its effect on sound quality is greater than virtually any component change available at the same cost. Yet most systems are set up with speakers placed where they fit rather than where they perform.
The reason placement matters so profoundly is that it simultaneously affects multiple aspects of the sound: bass frequency response, stereo imaging, soundstage depth and width, tonal balance, and the degree to which the room’s acoustic problems are excited. A change of 30 centimetres in speaker position can alter the bass response at the listening position by several decibels, shift the stereo image from vague to precisely focused, and change the tonal balance from bright and thin to warm and full. No cable, amplifier, or room treatment intervention produces changes of this magnitude at zero cost.
Distance from the rear wall is the single most influential placement variable for most speakers. As a speaker moves away from the rear wall, bass boundary reinforcement decreases — progressively reducing the low-frequency emphasis that wall proximity introduces. At the same time, the time delay between the speaker’s direct output and the rear wall reflection increases, moving the frequency of the first comb filter notch downward. For most speakers in most rooms, a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 metres from the rear wall produces the most balanced low-frequency performance — though the correct distance depends on the speaker’s own bass extension and the room’s modal behaviour.
Distance from side walls determines the timing of the first-order lateral reflection — the reflection that most significantly affects stereo imaging and soundstage width. Closer to the side wall means an earlier, stronger reflection. Further from the side wall delays and reduces it. Asymmetric side wall distances — where one speaker is closer to its side wall than the other — produce an asymmetric soundstage, with the image pulled toward whichever side has the stronger reflection.
Placement is not an approximation. It is a precision adjustment. The difference between a good position and an optimal one is audible and significant. Take the time to find it.
