Acoustic Panels — Placement Over Quantity

A common misconception about acoustic treatment is that more coverage means better results. In practice, placing panels without understanding where and why they’re needed often leads to an over-damped room — one that sounds lifeless, airless, and fatiguing in a different way than an untreated space. Strategic placement is always more effective than surface area alone.

The starting point for any treatment plan is identifying what the room actually needs. This requires either measurement — using a calibrated microphone and room analysis software — or a methodical listening evaluation to identify specific problems: excessive brightness, bass buildup, flutter echo between parallel walls, or a collapsed stereo image. Each symptom points toward a different solution and a different location.

Absorption panels reduce reflected energy and control reverberation time. Their effectiveness depends on thickness, density, and position. A 50mm panel placed at a first-order reflection point does targeted, useful work. The same panel placed randomly on a rear wall may contribute little while removing high-frequency energy the room needed for a sense of life and air.

Diffusion serves a different purpose. Rather than absorbing energy, diffusion scatters it, breaking up coherent reflections without reducing the room’s overall sense of space. Diffusers are typically most effective on rear walls and in larger rooms where some ambience is desirable.

Bass traps in corners address low-frequency accumulation, which requires significant absorption depth — typically 300mm or more to be effective at the frequencies where problems usually occur.

The principle is simple: treat what needs treating, where it needs treating. A small number of well-placed panels will outperform a room covered in foam tiles every time.
