Audio fatigue always has a cause. It is never simply the nature of the system, the nature of the music, or an unavoidable consequence of extended listening. Identifying the specific source — and working through the signal chain methodically — is the most effective approach to resolving it.
The first diagnostic step is isolation. Does fatigue occur equally across all recordings, or primarily on certain types of material — bright recordings, dense mixes, heavily compressed productions? If fatigue is selective, the problem likely lies in the playback chain amplifying a characteristic already present in the recording. If fatigue occurs even on well-recorded, naturally balanced material, the source is more likely the room, the speaker, or the electronics.
The second step is spectral evaluation. A measurement microphone and room analysis software can reveal frequency response anomalies at the listening position with precision that listening alone cannot match. An elevated presence region — 2 to 5 kHz — is visible in the measurement and will correlate directly with listening fatigue on sustained exposure. Bass modal peaks, which add a physical heaviness to the listening experience, are similarly clear in measurement.
Speaker placement is the lowest-cost intervention to attempt first. Moving speakers away from walls, adjusting toe-in, and changing the listening distance can produce meaningful spectral changes. If fatigue reduces significantly with a change in placement, room boundary interaction was a contributing factor.
Room treatment targeted at first-order reflection points — side walls, ceiling, and front wall — addresses the reflection-related fatigue mechanisms: comb filtering, flutter echo, and reverberant smearing. Treatment does not need to be extensive. A small number of well-placed panels can produce a disproportionate improvement in listening comfort.
At the electronics level, substitution is the clearest diagnostic tool. If fatigue reduces with a different amplifier, the original was a contributor. If it persists across amplifiers, the speaker or room is the more likely source.
Fatigue is information. It tells you something specific is wrong. Follow it methodically and it will lead you to the answer.
