The Source Hierarchy — Why Garbage In Means Garbage Out

The source component sits at the beginning of the signal chain, and what it contributes — or fails to contribute — travels through every subsequent stage to the listener’s ears. This is not a principle unique to audio; it applies to any information processing system. In audio reproduction, it means that no amplifier, however transparent, and no speaker, however resolving, can recover information that was lost, degraded, or distorted at the source. The source sets an absolute ceiling on the quality of everything that follows.

This principle is widely acknowledged but less widely acted upon. Buyers frequently invest heavily in amplification and speakers while treating the source as a secondary concern — a streaming box from a consumer electronics brand, a budget CD player, or a turntable purchased for its visual appeal rather than its engineering. The system then underperforms relative to its potential, and the cause is misattributed to the amplifier or speakers rather than to the degraded signal those components are doing their best to reproduce.

The practical implication is that source quality deserves investment proportional to — or greater than — the investment in the components downstream. A resolving, low-distortion amplifier paired with accurate, revealing speakers will expose every limitation of a mediocre source. The better the downstream system, the more clearly the source’s shortcomings are revealed.

What constitutes source quality varies by technology. In digital sources — CD players, streamers, and DACs — the critical parameters are timing accuracy (jitter), noise floor, analogue output stage design, and the quality of digital-to-analogue conversion itself. In analogue sources — turntables and cartridges — the critical parameters are mechanical stability, bearing noise, tonearm geometry, cartridge tracking accuracy, and phono stage quality. In streaming, the network environment, clocking architecture, and reclocking at the DAC all play roles.

In every case, the question is the same: is the source delivering the signal with full fidelity, or is it introducing degradation that the rest of the system will amplify and expose? Answer that question first, and the rest of the system’s capability has somewhere worth going.
