The Equilateral Triangle — A Starting Point, Not a Rule

The equilateral triangle configuration — where the distance between the two speakers equals the distance from each speaker to the listening position — is the most widely cited starting point for stereo speaker placement. It is a practical and broadly reliable default, but it is exactly that: a starting point. Understanding why it works, and where it breaks down, allows for refinements that can significantly improve performance beyond what the default configuration achieves.

The equilateral triangle positions the listener at the apex of an isoceles triangle, equidistant from both speakers. This geometry ensures that the sound from each speaker arrives at the listening position at the same time and at the same level — the basic requirement for a stable, centred stereo image. At the equilateral distance, each speaker subtends an angle of approximately 30 degrees from the centre of the listening axis, which places the stereo image within a naturally perceived field of view and produces a soundstage that extends comfortably between and just beyond the speaker positions.

Where the equilateral triangle is too small — the listening distance is shorter than the speaker separation — the image becomes unstable and wide. Phantom centre images become vague and difficult to localise, and instruments spread unnaturally to the sides. Where the equilateral triangle is too large — the listening distance significantly exceeds the speaker separation — the image narrows and collapses toward the centre. The sense of width diminishes and the stereo field feels compressed.

Room constraints often prevent strict adherence to the equilateral configuration. A room that is wider than it is long may require the speakers to be placed closer to the side walls than the equilateral triangle would suggest, forcing a compromise between speaker separation and lateral reflection management. A room that is very long may allow a listening distance that exceeds the equilateral distance, which can sometimes benefit imaging depth even at the cost of some width.

The equilateral triangle is a geometrically coherent starting point precisely because it balances width and focus without obvious compromise. But it is not sacred. The ear, evaluated systematically over a range of positions, will confirm whether a departure from it improves or diminishes the overall result.
