Low frequency overhang is one of the most damaging acoustic phenomena in domestic listening rooms, and one of the least discussed. It does not announce itself with obvious distortion or an identifiable flaw. Instead it works silently — accumulating in the room, masking the frequencies above it, and gradually degrading the transparency and clarity of everything the system is trying to reproduce.
Overhang occurs when low-frequency energy — typically below 200 Hz — is produced by a speaker or subwoofer and excites a room mode. Rather than decaying naturally at the same rate as the musical note that produced it, the modal energy sustains. It continues to ring after the instrument has stopped. This residual energy does not simply add warmth or body to the sound — it adds a layer of low-frequency noise that sits underneath the music like a persistent haze.
The problem is fundamentally one of decay time. A room mode has a resonant frequency at which it stores energy efficiently. When a musical signal contains energy at or near that frequency, the mode is excited and rings at its natural frequency. The longer the room’s decay time at that frequency — its Q factor — the longer the overhang persists. In an untreated room with hard parallel surfaces and no bass absorption, modal decay times can extend to several hundred milliseconds. A bass note that lasts 100 milliseconds in the recording continues to ring in the room for 400 milliseconds after the instrument has fallen silent.
This has a cascading effect on everything above it. The sustained low-frequency energy does not stay neatly below the frequencies it is produced at. It intermodulates with and masks the midrange and upper frequencies, reducing the listener’s ability to resolve detail, distinguish instruments, and hear the natural decay of voices and instruments in the recording. The system sounds less transparent not because the mid and high frequency reproduction has deteriorated, but because it is being buried under a layer of sustained bass energy the room is refusing to release.
Recognising overhang as a systemic problem rather than a simple bass excess is the starting point for addressing it. It is not corrected by turning the bass down. It is corrected by controlling the room’s modal decay.
