There is a relationship between listening volume, dynamic range, and fatigue that is poorly understood by most listeners, and actively obscured by a recording industry that has spent decades compressing the dynamic range of commercial releases. Understanding this relationship changes how you think about both the recordings you play and the system you play them on.
The ear’s sensitivity is not constant. At moderate listening levels — approximately 75 to 85 dB SPL at the listening position — the ear operates in a comfortable, responsive range where both quiet detail and loud peaks are handled naturally. At higher volumes, the ear’s protective mechanisms engage: the stapedius muscle contracts, reducing transmission efficiency and compressing the perceived dynamic range. Sustained high-volume listening therefore has a built-in fatigue mechanism that is independent of the system’s quality.
Modern commercial recordings frequently have their dynamic range compressed and limited during mastering — the loudness war phenomenon that has narrowed the difference between the quietest and loudest passages on many popular releases to 6 dB or less. This places the average signal level permanently near the top of its range. Played at a volume where the loudest passages reach a natural listening level, the quietest passages are also at that level — there is no dynamic contrast, no quiet moment for the auditory system to rest and reset. The ear remains continuously activated at a high sensitivity level, and fatigue accumulates steadily.
Playback systems that add their own compression — amplifiers operating near their power ceiling, speakers exceeding their excursion limits, or room modes that sustain and blur transients — compound this effect further. The listener turns up the volume seeking more detail and engagement, but instead drives the system into greater compression. The detail does not improve; the fatigue increases.
The practical remedies are well-defined: listen at moderate levels, seek out recordings with genuine dynamic range, and ensure the playback system has sufficient headroom to reproduce peaks cleanly without compression. A system that plays at 75 dB with 20 dB of headroom above it is a fundamentally more relaxed and sustainable listening environment than one operating at 90 dB with 3 dB of headroom.
Comfort in listening is not a sign of low ambition. It is the condition in which music is most fully experienced.
