Hi-Fi and Component Myths That Cost People Money

The hi-fi component market is fertile ground for mythology. Products are sold on the basis of claims that range from the plausible but unsubstantiated to the physically implausible. Separating genuine performance factors from marketing narrative requires both scepticism and a willingness to examine evidence.

Myth: Expensive cables make a large and obvious difference. Cable design has legitimate engineering considerations — resistance, capacitance, inductance, and shielding all affect signal transmission in measurable ways. However, the magnitude of these effects in well-designed cables of reasonable quality is typically below the threshold of audibility under controlled conditions. The premium commanded by high-end cable brands is rarely proportional to any engineering advantage. Blind listening tests consistently show that listeners cannot reliably identify cable differences at price points above a modest quality threshold.

Myth: Components need burn-in before they sound their best. The burn-in claim — that electronic components, cables, or speakers undergo a sonic transformation after hours of use — is widespread but poorly supported. Electronic components do exhibit minor parameter changes during initial use as materials settle, but the claimed sonic effects are far larger than any measured electrical change can account for. Speaker drivers do break in mechanically as surrounds and spiders loosen, which can produce a small and measurable change in bass extension and compliance. But the dramatic, system-wide transformation described by burn-in advocates has not been demonstrated under controlled conditions.

Myth: Tube amplifiers are always warmer and more musical than solid-state. Tube amplifiers produce a characteristic distortion profile — predominantly low-order even harmonics — that some listeners find euphonic. But a well-designed solid-state amplifier can be extraordinarily neutral and transparent, and a poorly designed tube amplifier can sound harsh and coloured. The technology is not the variable; the design quality is. Blanket characterisations of entire amplifier technologies as inherently superior or inferior serve the purposes of marketing better than they serve the listener.

Spend your budget on room treatment, good speakers, and a capable amplifier. That hierarchy will serve you better than premium interconnects.
