One of the most persistent myths in audio is that more amplifier power is always better. In reality, how much power you need is determined less by personal preference and more by a specific set of physical variables — the most significant of which is the size of the room you’re listening in.
Sound pressure level decreases with distance from the source. In a larger room, the listening position is typically further from the speakers, meaning the direct sound arrives at a lower level. To maintain the same perceived loudness at the listening seat, more amplifier power is required. This isn’t a matter of opinion — it follows directly from the inverse square law, which tells us that doubling the distance from a sound source reduces the SPL by approximately 6 dB, requiring four times the amplifier power to compensate.
A small room of 12 to 15 square metres, with a listening distance of around 2 to 2.5 metres, places very modest demands on an amplifier — particularly with a speaker of reasonable sensitivity. In such an environment, 20 to 30 watts per channel is often more than sufficient to reach realistic and even demanding listening levels. In a larger room of 30 to 40 square metres with a listening distance of 4 metres or more, the same amplifier may struggle to deliver adequate headroom on dynamic peaks.
Room gain — the bass reinforcement provided by room boundaries — also plays a role. Smaller rooms provide more boundary reinforcement at low frequencies, which can make bass reproduction feel fuller with less amplifier effort. Larger rooms offer less of this natural reinforcement, placing greater demands on both the speaker and the amplifier in the low-frequency range.
The practical takeaway is this: match your amplifier to your room before matching it to your taste. Power is not a luxury — in a large room, it is a requirement.
