When enthusiasts compare loudspeakers, they tend to focus on frequency response, driver size, and cabinet finish. Sensitivity — typically expressed as dB SPL at 1 watt at 1 metre — is often treated as a footnote. It shouldn’t be. Sensitivity is one of the most practically significant specifications on a loudspeaker datasheet, and misunderstanding it leads to poor amplifier pairings and disappointing results.
A speaker rated at 89 dB sensitivity requires twice the amplifier power of an 89 dB speaker to produce the same volume level — because every 3 dB increase in SPL requires a doubling of power. Scale that across a wider sensitivity gap and the implications become significant. A speaker at 85 dB sensitivity needs roughly eight times the power of a 94 dB speaker to reach the same loudness. This is not a marginal difference. It fundamentally changes which amplifiers are suitable.
Low-sensitivity speakers — those below 87 dB — generally require amplifiers with substantial current delivery and wattage to perform well. They tend to suit solid-state designs that maintain control and composure under load. High-sensitivity speakers — above 92 dB — can be driven to satisfying levels with amplifiers producing very little power, including single-ended triode designs of 8 watts or fewer, provided the speaker’s impedance is also well-behaved.
The matching implication is clear: before selecting an amplifier, establish your speaker’s sensitivity. Before selecting a speaker, consider what amplifier you intend to use or already own. These decisions are interconnected, and treating them independently invites incompatibility.
Sensitivity also interacts with noise floor. A high-sensitivity speaker paired with an amplifier that has a high noise floor will reproduce that noise audibly during quiet passages. This is why low-noise amplifier design matters more in high-sensitivity systems, and why flea-watt tube amplifiers demand careful partnering.
Sensitivity is not a quality indicator — it is a matching parameter. Use it as one.
